Poem: Surrounded

Ten hummingbirds at one feeder.
Swarming, knowing the storm
is coming and
could sweep
them away.

Blue skies meekly giving way.
Storm clouds brewing and rolling
they come and
I feel them
blowing.

Dogs bark, fuss and howl at the change.
Sensing the lightning and thunder
that they cannot chase away
they hide, afraid
of what they
do not
know.

I watch from the back door north faced.
Flinching from the strikes and yet
hearing no thunder yet
and that feeling
of being
surrounded
crushes
 me.

The storm rides on cold northern air.
Bringing what brews within
to leave us with rain,
hail or worse?
Or pass
us by
again.

This storm is me, today, how I feel.
Surrounded by storms and in my
little pocket of calm
I feel the pressure
mounting against
you and me
to change
again.

I want to run into the darkness, waving
and screaming. Like a fool with a
lantern trying to signal that
fabled runaway train.
Knowing it is
too late but
still we
have to
try.

Lights flicker, the power wavers weakly.
Even the grid seems struck by it
and less bright for the might
that these clouds can
shear down, and
hammer us
under with
power.

I waver too, feeling alone here.
It is coming, I can feel
the pressure bearing
down heavy
upon this
place.

Rest won't come, not with worry there.
Peace won't come, not with
that storm in here and
that storm out there
and me in the
middle
alone.

Again.

Or still?

I read so much poetry around the blogosphere, but this made me stop in my tracks for a moment. I really enjoy the feeling of it, somehow, and the imagery (the approaching storm echoing within you and your relationship)! I like it! *smile* Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful poem, Shanyn-- you take interesting risks with the form, with so much emotional honesty-- the metaphor of inner/outer storm, and how the creatures in the universe alert us to things if we pay attention-- to me the hardest thing in the world to do is to love in a close relationship-- I'm forever torn between wanting closeness and wanting freedom....and I'm almost 63..... I admire your faith, and am sure you are a fabulous wife and mother. xxxj

Great use of imagery to convey the storm outside and inside. I was captivated and moved by your words.

I love the way you use your poetry to actually pull the reader along
The storm swirls around and yet there is still the voice fighting...

Champagne - :-) Thank you for the comment, I'm so glad you stopped by and honoured my poem caught your eye. *smiles* stop by again soon!

Jenne - I too struggle with the intimacy of being close and my need for freedom. We work constantly for balance, like being on a too big sea in a much too small ship it seems :-) Thanks for coming by and leaving some love (and encouragement!)

Knights Heart - :-) Thanks for coming by and leaving the comment.

Moondust - Thank you for your comment and for stopping by, it was great to see you here.

This is really brilliantly done, the storm outside mirroring the one indoors, bearing down. Very relatable topic. A really great read!

This is my third try to leave a message here - it keeps disappearing, grrrrrr. This poem is brilliantly done - the storm outside mirroring the one bearing down indoors. Very relevant topic, and so relatable. Well done.

Quickie to Sherry - I keep on trying to comment at yours with no joy whatsoever. So thanks for the poem and the introduction to the book.

Mystic-Mom, this was a really good read. I liked the fit of the form, those lines closing down, and found the final stanza outstanding. Good one!

You do this very well you know? I always thrill to your descriptions of nature. They are superb. I don't know what this style is (the shape of your stanzas) but it is cool. And you did a really good job of bringing the storm inside without any ... well, it was done very smoothly. I think that that is hard to do.

Your stanzas crashed over me like waves. Exactly the right form for a stormy poem.
